How to Make Matcha Tea

- Detailed Steps for Preparation -

Preparing matcha tea can be quick and easy. The following directions offer a comprehensive process on how to make matcha tea:

Recommended Supplies:

• Bamboo tea scoop
• Bamboo whisk
• Chawan (Japanese tea bowl)

Directions:

1. Before preparing, it is best to keep matcha frozen in order to help preserve its quality. Remove it from freezing ahead of time to allow the matcha to properly thaw before making the tea.

2. After matcha has been removed from freezing and has reached the point of room temperature, sift the powdery substance through a fine strainer to break up any large chunks. Smaller chunks will likely ensure a better mixture of the tea.

3. Place 1 ½ to 2 scoops of matcha inside the chawan using the bamboo tea scoop. More or less matcha can be used depending on personal taste.

4. Add some cold water to the matcha inside the bowl and stir until the mixture is a paste-like substance.

5. Add approximately 1/4 to 1/3 cup of hot water to the bowl. The amount of water used can be adjusted based on the desired thickness of the matcha tea.

6. Using the bamboo whisk, vigorously stir the matcha and water for approximately 15 to 30 seconds until large bubbles are no longer present and only a light foam appears. Techniques to effective stirring may include using vigorous movements to stir back and forth in the middle of the bowl or by stirring in a motion in the shape of a capital “N.” It is important to not let the bamboo whisk touch the bottom of the bowl during the mixing process.

7. Once the mixture looks right, slowly lift the bamboo whisk from the bowl. Only a small bubbly foam should be present in the tea.

8. Allow the tea to cool for a moment and sip the hot beverage carefully. This tea is best enjoyed without the addition of sugar, milk or cream.

Matcha is one of the most convenient and nutritious teas to make. By following these simple instructions, this fabulous Japanese tea can easily be enjoyed on a regular basis.
